Description:

Rising star Andi Weigand has been on our radar for a while now and we’ve recently had the extraordinary pleasure of importing a pallet of his wines from his base in Iphofen, Germany to our warehouse here in Melbourne. They’ve travelled superbly well, and we’re delighted to be able to enjoy and share them now.

Andi lives and works in the Franken region of central Germany. He farms a number of well-established sites around the town of Iphofen which are home to local white varietals such as silvaner, müller-thurgau and riesling, as well as chardonnay and pinot noir – all of which are planted over the calcareous keuper soils which, according to Andi, impart a very distinct herbal flavour to the wines and allow for the production of fresh and stable wines with complex flavours even when picked at slightly earlier stages of ripeness.

This comes from one of Andi’s favourite sites called Sparrnbach, which has particularly stony soils with a mixture of shelly limestone and keuper. It was direct-pressed, fermented in small barrels and saw 20 months on lees prior to bottling.

A touch lighter and leaner but concentrated and layered, with a wonderful balance between vivid primary fruit and more crystalline structure from the time in barrel, and lots of delicious complexity from the lees. Above all, it has the elevated, direct and thrilling energy of fruit grown on super calcareous soils, and has been vinified exceptionally well.
