Description:
Rising star Andi Weigand has been on our radar for a while now and we’ve recently had the extraordinary pleasure of importing a pallet of his wines from his base in Iphofen, Germany to our warehouse here in Melbourne. They’ve travelled superbly well, and we’re delighted to be able to enjoy and share them now.
Andi lives and works in the Franken region of central Germany. He farms a number of well-established sites around the town of Iphofen which are home to local white varietals such as silvaner, müller-thurgau and riesling, as well as chardonnay and pinot noir – all of which are planted over the calcareous keuper soils which, according to Andi, impart a very distinct herbal flavour to the wines and allow for the production of fresh and stable wines with complex flavours even when picked at slightly earlier stages of ripeness.
This silvaner comes from deep-rooted 40-year-old vines and was direct-pressed to barrel, spending 9 months on lees before bottling. The variety is autochthonous to the region of Franken and, according to Andi, expresses the crisp, spicy and herbal character of the Keuper soils especially well.
