A cellar-release from the extraordinary Catherine and Gilles Vergé in Macon, Burgundy.

Catherine and Gilles farm 3 hectares of old-vine Chardonnay around the village of Viré. Serious and passionate campaigners for natural wine, they are driven by their commitment to producing wines with zero additives and farming with as much sensitivity as possible. They are the current president (Catherine) and vice-presidents (Gilles) of Les Vins S.A.I.N.S.

They've been farming here since the '80s and the vines for the Vieilles Vignes parcel are now over 135 years old. The soils here are a mix of active clay and limestone.

100% chardonnay from 2012, this finished its primary fermentation in bottle, resulting in a pet nat-style sparkling wine. Tasting today, it’s concentrated and racy, with a glorious nose of green apples and Champagne-esque, lightly oxidative secondary and tertiary compounds.

Still a very youthful wine, this is entering a magnificent window and would also be a very fine proposition for the cellar.
