Description
Julien Delrieu’s desire to understand the natural processes behind culturally specific items has led him from his birthplace in Brittany to studying beer brewing with monks in Belgium, cheesemaking in Italy, the role of yeast in sake production in Japan and winemaking and beekeeping back in France. The remarkable chenin blanc wines of some other local Anjou producers convinced him to establish himself in the Loire Valley in 2010.
Today, Julien Delrieu and Thibault Ducleux are partners in a 3.5 hectare domaine in Faveray-Mâchelles, the heart of Anjou Noir territory, about 36kms south of Angers. Anjou Noir refers to the abundant, dark schist soils of the region which play a large role in the powerful wines grown there. The Le Jeau cuvée is named after the 65+ year-old, west-facing, hillside vineyard where this wine was harvested from.
The grapes were fermented in a collection of fibreglass tanks and small old wooden barrels and ultimately run to barrel for elevage.
Chiseled, saline, dry and mineral, with aromas and flavours of tart to very ripe pears, apples and quince along with a wave of wonderfully balancing acidity near the finish. While this is a delight on its own, it would complement a wide array of seafood, vegetable and poultry dishes along with fresh cheeses.
