Description

The 2018 Terricola is a blend of tempranillo and merlot grown on well-established vines in the hot, dry and chalky soils of Carricola. As is customary for the domaine, it was made entirely in a combination of plastic, fibreglass and steel tanks.

2018 was a dry year resulting in thick skins which, combined with the use of stalks and choice of fermentation vessels, yielded a very classical wine albeit with a firm tannic structure which has taken a little longer to soften. Happily, we’ve observed a real leap forward in recent months in the wine’s structure, with the tannin having polemerised nicely and the wine altogether reaching a really satisfying stage of its evolution, particularly in regards to fruit development and soil expression.

Tasting today, there’s an immediate and very delicious aromatic expression of calcareous earth, with tobacco, pepper and other woody spices along with dark and nicely evolved plummy fruit, and some subtle meaty character. On the palate it’s medium-bodied and fresh, as the wines almost always are thanks to the albaris soils, albeit with a level of acidity which is now quite relaxed. On the palate, there’s plenty of matter mingling with the delicious ripe fruit, with nice grit, gristle and sinew followed by waves of drying tannin and a lingering notion of stalks on the back-palate.

Deliciously rustic in its texture and abundant in tertiary complexity, this is a serious and structural affair which simply cries out for protein, with fatty pieces of lamb and steak immediately coming to mind.
