Description
Outstanding grenache from Languedoc star Jean Francois “Jeff” Coutelou.
Mas Coutelou is located in Puimisson, a commune in the Hérault department of the Languedoc and to the east of Béziers. It's been a winemaking village for over 200 years and most of its soils are a mix of red clays and limestone. Jeff’s 14 hectares of vines sit amongst a few hundred olive trees and were planted in 1966 by his father, who was one of the pioneers of organic viticulture in the area.
This is bulbous, ripe and generous, with varietally gentle tannic structure and layer upon layer of seductive dark-red fruit having been coaxed from the carbonic maceration. Thanks to the limestone content of the soils, however, the wine retains balancing freshness despite its sunkissed style of fruit. An effortlessly delicious bistro wine of really tremendous quality, this exemplifies so much of what we love about grenache and this sun-soaked part of France.
