Pristine chardonnay from Henty, Victoria.
Hochkirch is a hugely significant producer in the context of organic farming in Australia. John Nagorcka is the fourth generation of his family to farm their property, with the family having migrated here from Germany in the mid-19th century. Starting with livestock, vegetables and cereal crops before adding 25 acres of vineyards in the 1990s, the family has always farmed in accordance with biodynamic principles and today are Demeter-certified.
The Tarrington vineyard, owned by John’s sister and part of the Nagorcka family’s original 700 acres, is also biodynamically farmed. The Tarrington wines have previously been made by John and released under the Tarrington label, but have now been officially incorporated into the Hochkirch label with the Tarrington vineyard designation.
After a couple of challenging, very cool years, 2024 was relatively warm and allowed for grapes with excellent concentration and a perfect degree of physiological ripeness. The 2024 is medium-bodied and classical, with an unmistakably cool-climate line of acidity softened beautifully by the process of full malolactic conversion, and lovely, complex leesy characters.
This is a brilliant Australian wine which will be of interest to fans of both old-school and more modern styles of chardonnay.
