Description

Anjou vigneron Adrien de Mello makes some of our very favourite wines in the area from his four hectares of vines near the village of Saint Aubin de Luigné. With well-established vines planted over clay and schist and everything vinified in fibreglass, the wines are pure and gently mineral, all with glorious primary fruit.

Here we have 50-year-old gamay, growing on the dark schist of Saint-Aubin-de-Luignié from the remarkably high quality 2023 vintage.

For those who have tasted the varietally classical and pleasingly austere 2022 rendition of this wine, the 2023 is a fraction softer, the fruit just a shade sweeter and with more clarity.

The harmony of this wine is staggering, especially considering its relative youth – this being a reflection of Adrien’s unique touch in the winery. The stalks are just-evident and delicious, and the length of maceration has added minerality and balance to the fruit captured through the use of whole bunches.

In short, this is a very pure and very high quality medium-bodied red wine for which we give the highest recommendation.
