Description:
The wines made by Kyatt Dixon and his team continue to dazzle us. They really are some of our very favourite currently being produced in the country – always classical and precise with very pure varietal expression, and always compelling in their expression of the Mount Gambier area’s various pockets, with both limestone and volcanic influence on show in varying levels across the different cuvees.
2023 is a brilliant albeit cold and wet year, with really excellent quality of fruit made even more special by a slightly longer period of elevage and time in bottle.
This is direct-press riesling from the Apple Farm vineyard, which is very much influenced by limestone due to a lighter layer of sandy topsoil over the bedrock, and is the same site from which Kyatt’s Macerato is made. The wine was made entirely in steel tank.
Both variety and soil here have contributed to a wine which is fresh, chiselled and direct, although the development of a small amount of botrytis in 2023 has balanced the scales with a bit of roundness and flesh in the texture. Brisk, clean and classical, with taut citrus and green apple skins tinged with a lightly oxidative and bready, leesy element.
