Description
From the extraordinary project of Luis Gil, based just north of Lisbon, Portugal.
Luis used to work under Rodrigo at Humus before embarking on this project. A passionate surfer, he has found a number of tiny vineyards along the famous surf coast north of Lisbon which have been abandoned by their previous owners and which he has restored to productivity over the course of a few years of careful farming. The parcels range from 50-130 years of age and are all home to indigenous varieties.
At harvest time, Luis is very rigorous regarding fruit selection and often selects only half or less-than-half of a parcel’s fruit to include in the wines. Everything is vinified with some degree of skin-contact and whole bunches, and all of the wines see a minimum of 20 months elevage in barrel before bottling.
Owing to both the influence of the Atlantic and Luis’ slightly earlier picking times, the wines tend to be lighter and leaner, but are saline and very deep, with the sort of crystalline precision and composure that only comes from longer maturation times.
Wipeout is a rosé made from a blend of 80% white fruit and 20% red fruit, all of which was co-fermented as whole bunches for 16 days before being pressed off.
These are very special indeed and we are thrilled to have them in the shop.
