Description:

From young winemaker Max Baumann, whose 3.5 hectares of silvaner and pinot noir grow just outside the village of Dertingen, straddling the regions of Baden and Franken in central Germany, not far from Frankfurt.

A fourth-generation winemaker, Max took over some of the family’s plots in 2016, which he has always farmed biodynamically, vinifying the wines without the use of additives. He brings to his practice years of experience working for other talented producers in the region, including Gut Oggau in Burgenland.

The soils here are limestone rich, the climate is cool and the vineyards are planted on steep slopes. Max uses a range of styles of fermentation but all of the wines are matured in wood for extended periods prior to bottling.

Not dissimilar to those made by Andi Weigand in Franken, the wines are classical and elegant, with chiselled structure and a direct style of acidity, and sing of very high quality fruit.

This is 100% direct-pressed silvaner from Max’s two favourite plots, which are 40-60 years of age and grow on particularly rocky, calcareous soil. A wonderful expression of the variety, with lightly honeyed orange blossom aromatics giving way to a taut, fresh and detailed palate. Superb.
