Description:

From young winemaker Max Baumann, whose 3.5 hectares of silvaner and pinot noir grow just outside the village of Dertingen, straddling the regions of Baden and Franken in central Germany, not far from Frankfurt.

A fourth-generation winemaker, Max took over some of the family’s plots in 2016, which he has always farmed biodynamically, vinifying the wines without the use of additives. He brings to his practice years of experience working for other talented producers in the region, including Gut Oggau in Burgenland.

The soils here are limestone rich, the climate is cool and the vineyards are planted on steep slopes. Max uses a range of styles of fermentation but all of the wines are matured in wood for extended periods prior to bottling.

Not dissimilar to those made by Andi Weigand in Franken, the wines are classical and elegant, with chiselled structure and a direct style of acidity, and sing of very high quality fruit.

This is 85% pinot noir and 15% pinot meunier – mostly direct-pressed with a small portion undergoing carbonic maceration. Grown on a windy, elevated limestone plateau which has rendered a bright, floral and summery style with lots of freshness and tension, and which does indeed bear a resemblance to some of the wonderful rosés of Gut Oggau.
