Description

Having arrived in Australia during winter in 2023, our bite-sized allocation (5 dozen) of Louis and Charlotte Perot’s top wine has been slowly building depth and complexity and, following a tasting last week, we’re now ready to release this remarkable snapshot of Cahors terroir.

Based above the village of Puy l’Évêque, in a lieu-dit named Alary, Louis and Charlotte Perot have, for nearly 15 years, farmed and lived in a charming and secluded property which, bit by bit, they have renovated and transformed into their home. Once home to a collection of dilapidated farm buildings and two small parcels of malbec, the pair have established further plantings on the property with a nod to the far distant past before malbec became the dominant variety of the area.

A region of complex and highly regarded soil, the vineyards by the river are mainly alluvial but become loamy and sandy higher on the plateau where Louis and Charlotte are situated, with lots of limestone. What this means for wines from mature vineyards like Un Coeur Simple in years like 2021, is remarkable freshness, tension and focus on the palate and the chiselled nature that these extraordinary soils so often impart.

The winemaking for this cuvee is relatively classical. The fruit is totally destemmed, fermented in tank and then transferred to barrel. The wines are then bottled following ten months of elevage in a very cold, damp cellar.

This is arguably our new favourite wine in the cellar and, not that we needed reminding, another example of why we love this region so very much.
