Description:

It’s been a while between drinks for us, so to speak, in regards to Karl and Eva Schnabel’s pinot noir. So it gives us great pleasure to have their 2021 masterpiece in the building, having enjoyed its necessary period of rest and now entering a truly magnificent window.

2021 is a very, very high-quality year for the domaine – as good as anything we’ve ever tasted from this farm. The wines are all concentrated, classical and correct, with both perfectly ripe fruit and the imprint of quartzy minerality which the site imparts so well.

This comes from Karl and Eva’s Hochegg site, grown on siliceous rock with iron deposits. Relative to other parts of the property, Hochegg is finer, cooler and more delicate and requires a touch more time to reveal its complexity, but is capable of giving wines of profound and ethereal quality.

A lighter shade of red in the glass, this offers pure and gently umami dark-red varietal fruit, with balanced acidity and a polished tannic structure – all framed by a very classical expression of wood. Complex and long on the palate, with a wonderful balance between pretty fruit and more savoury nuance, this is a beautiful testament to the couple’s experiences working in Burgundy in the 90s and would indeed rank among some of the finer examples of red wine from that region.
