Description

Utterly spellbinding cabernet franc from one of the Loire Valley’s unsung heroes.

Thierry Hesnault farms 2.5 hectares in the Sarthe department, near the village of Chahaignes in the northern part of Touraine. Having travelled extensively overseas and worked with producers in Bordeaux, Champagne and Vouvray, as well as working with friends and fellow Sarthe luminaries Eric Nicolas and Jean-Pierre Robinot, Thierry developed a sensitive approach to farming and an appreciation for old vine material that ultimately compelled him to embark on a long search for his own parcels and start his own production in 2009.

This comes from a 90-year-old parcel of cabernet franc and was fermented as whole bunches and eventually run to old barrels for elevage. Medium-bodied, classical and extraordinarily vivid in its varietal character, this is concentrated and spice-laden with red fruit and lots of dusty, peppery pyrazine character, and the sort of profound depth of flavour that only comes from well-farmed, very very old vines.

A serious and totally brilliant bottling which is tasting great right now and would also be a very fine proposition for the cellar.
